To get an idea of how beloved Stan Savran was as a sportscaster and down-the-middle Pittsburgh sports commentator, one needs only see the comments posted by every Pittsburgh sports media figure after Savran passed away yesterday at age 76. The iconic phrase, “love the show” was a big part of it.
Steelers president Art Rooney II said Savran “was a gentleman in every way possible, and he did so much for our city and Western Pa. with his honest candor….” The Penguins posted that he was “a true professional at his craft. As long-time listeners, who loved the show, we will miss you, Stan.” Pirates chairman Bob Nutting wrote, “No one was more knowledgeable, more fair, or more honest…,” calling him a “Pittsburgh sports legend.”
Savran was diagnosed with lung cancer in January of last year. He died at his home in Upper St. Clair. No official cause of death has been released.
