The next generation of firefighters was the focus of a hearing by the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
Officials say while firefighting technology continues to improve the ranks of fire companies are not and without those members, those resources are useless. Some volunteer fire companies are focused on recruiting high school students to become firefighters.
With the number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania down from about 300,000 in the 1970’s to around 38,000 today, some say that number may be even lower.
